Business, Economy & Demographics
The Weed business community is comprised of many small and sole proprietor businesses, as well as several large employers — College of the Siskiyous, Crystal Geyser Roxane, Roseburg Forest Products, and Siskiyou Development, Inc. There is a vital network of services and agencies available to help prospective businesses become successfully established in Weed.
Local citizens and new arrivals avail themselves of favorable tax dispensations (Shasta Valley Enterprise Zone). Training opportunities at College of the Siskiyous are available, as well as support and information through the Workforce Connection. The experienced staff at City Hall along with several county-wide agencies are available to aid in negotiating the steps necessary for starting a business, building or remodeling, and finding good employees.
City Hall at 550 Main Street is a primary source of information concerning business regulations and licensing, and various permit requirements. City Hall is open from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Thursday and 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday. The phone number is (530) 938-5020.
Before you open for business, check for the kind of permits, inspections and the requirements you must meet. Proprietors who relocate a business, increase area usage space or change their method of operation in any way should check with the appropriate agency. Structural changes of most kinds to an existing business location requires coordination with the city. This includes plumbing and electrical work, and changes in the heating system. It may also include the installation of a new sign.
Commercial establishments must have business licenses. Home businesses in Weed are exempt if: residential use of the property is clearly the primary use; no more than one room is devoted to the business; and no paid employees other than family members work onsite.
State law mandates an architect or engineer for most commercial building projects. The Planning Department will help you determine whether or not your project is exempt.
